Permits are the most commonly skipped step. Many business owners learn about them after the sign is up — at which point removing and redoing the work costs twice what doing it correctly would have.
Which signs need permission?
The general rule: any sign visible from public space falls under advertising regulation. Shopfront signs, totems, roof signs, window graphics and logos on buildings are all included. Interior wayfinding not visible from outside is usually exempt.

- Owner identification and tax registration details
- Business operating licence
- Technical drawing showing the sign's dimensions
- Visualisation of the sign in position on the façade
- Lease agreement or title deed for rights to the façade
- Building management consent where the façade is shared
Size and appearance limits
Municipalities usually regulate how far a sign may project, its maximum area and its mounting height. On some streets an urban design guide applies, which can restrict even colour and material. Rules are notably stricter within historic streetscapes.
Units inside shopping malls
Inside a mall there are two approvals: municipal permission and compliance with the mall's own façade guidelines. Mall guidelines are often stricter, limiting letter height, return depth, projection and brightness separately. Obtain the guideline before fabrication begins.
How the process runs
The order is: survey and measurement → design → technical drawings and visualisation → municipal application → fabrication after approval → installation. Starting fabrication before approval is risky; if the size or position is refused, the sign cannot be used.
